International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an international examination owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment (English). The examination focuses on testing a person’s expertise in the English language, primarily focusing on speaking and writing skills. IELTS tests are a requirement for studying or migrating to foreign countries where English is widely used, such as Australia, New Zealand, the USA, UK, and Canada.

The exam can be given to anyone above the age of 16. As more and more students are aspiring to study abroad, the demand for clearing IELTS is also increasing. Also, people who are settling in foreign due to their job have to clear IELTS. The exam is mainly to assure the company or institute that you have a command over the language and would be able to communicate using the language.

IELTS is of two types:

1. IELTS Academic: for higher education in foreign

2. IELTS General Training: for migration

The countries that take into account your IELTS scores are Australia, New Zealand, the USA, UK, and Canada.

IELTS tests your proficiency in four areas of the language, namely:

● Listening

● Reading

● Speaking

● Writing

All four of these are to check whether you have a good understanding of the English language.

The total examination time is about 2 hours and 45 minutes. The order followed is

● Listening

● Reading

● Writing and there is no break in between.

The Speaking test can be held before or after the examination or seven days prior to the exam.

The listening test is for 30 minutes, in which you have to answer questions based on the four pre-recorded audio tapes you will listen to. This will check your attentiveness and your understanding of the core point of the issue, your opinion and attitude towards those speaking, and your ability to follow the ideas presented. Top 10 schools in Dehradun said the reading section is for one hour, in which you will have to read long articles related to the purpose of your exam and answer the questions accordingly. This will check your logical thinking and how well you

interpret what the writer wanted to convey. The writing section is also for one hour in which you will be given a topic to write on in a formal, semi-formal, or informal way as asked in the question paper. The speaking section is for 50 minutes, in which you will have a one-to-one conversation with the examiner on various topics. You will also be given a topic to speak on for two minutes. You will get one minute to prepare your speech.

The exams are held 48 times a year which makes it four times a month. This offers people who want to take the exam a flexible approach, and they can register according to their comfort. The registration fee is ₹14,000, but it is subjected to changes which you can also check from the website. The payment can be made through debit or credit card only. It is also advised to register one month before the date you desire to give the exam.

Rest is all your preparation. For every exam, it is 80% preparation and 20% action. Practice from previous test papers that you can access from the Cambridge Assessment or British Council website. Cambridge test series can also help a lot, along with that you may prefer studying from the books that have previous year questions as well as answers.
